Magnetism’s change and the effect on life
Magnetism is one of the powers in the Earth; it is also a one of the environmental problems, although it is invisible, and not so known as an issue. As Garwah wrote, “The Earth’s magnetism has existed for three billion years and is generated 3,000 kilometers under our feet by the stirring of our planet’s liquid iron core. This liquid iron core causes the Earth to act like a giant magnet; the magnetic lines are organized on a bipolar basis, more or less in alignment with Earth’s rotational axis” (2006, par.1). That invisible force helps us as a magnetic field which is produced by magnetism in the Earth; from the Dept. of Physics & Astronomy University of Tennessee, “Magnetic fields are produced by the motion of electrical charges. For example, the magnetic field of a bar magnet results from the motion of negatively charged electrons in the magnet. The origin of the Earth’s magnetic field is not completely understood, but is thought to be associated with electrical currents produced by the coupling of convective effects and rotation in the spinning liquid metallic outer core of iron and nickel. This mechanism is termed the dynamo ” (n.d, par. 9); in life it is like a compass led by the magnetism in the earth, and shows accurate direction. The system like a compass is used as radar in some vehicles, ships, planes, and military vehicles, and so on. Besides, magnetism is useful for our life; the magnetic field plays a role as a shield from toxic energy. The sun, placed far from the Earth, gives us heat, but it makes a terrible problem called solar wind, and it is toxic for all creatures in the Earth in spite of its benefits. Therefore, magnetism is necessary for our life. However that encouraging force has faded lately; according to Hill, “The movement of the magnetic north pole has caused changes in how much compasses deviate from the geographic North Pole, or true north, Stoner said. A compass reading in Oregon is about 17 degrees east of true north. In 1960, the compass reading would have been 20 degrees east of true north. Although the 3 degree difference seems minor, it’s a relatively rapid shift for only a few decades” (2005, par. 14), and then scientists have not found the solution to this serious problem yet (Porco, 2006). This could be a tremendous problem.
First, the shift of the ecosystem would happen. According to Garwah, “Many animals seem to be able to detect the Earth’s magnetism” (2005, par. 7), and “Pigeons, especially those bred for their homing instincts, seem to be able to detect the Earth’s magnetic fields” (2005, par. 11), so if the magnetic field were lost, many animals that depend on it for their life would panic, and might die because they have lost the accurate direction brought by the magnetic pole from the earth. Then, disappearance of those animals would cause more effect on the ecosystem to other animals next. The creatures that prey on the former animals generally would lose one of their prey for living.
Second, the loss of the magnetic field would also bring up a change in our lives. According to Garwah, “The magnetic stripe on your credit card contains important information about your account in magnetic code. Anything that de-magnetizes the stripe can wipe out the code and make the card unusable” (2005, par. 20). This phenomenon must cause some panic in our life at least. Not only our credit card, but also some devices concerning our lives would also be changed by the loss of the magnetic field.
Third, the environment would invite the wrong problems to all of the lives on the Earth because of the lack of magnetic pole. As Garwah wrote, “The earth and all of life are defended from the dangerous effect of the solar wind” (2005, par. 23); therefore, since we are losing the forceful shield called the earth’s magnetism, the solar wind would make us damaged directly. Consequently, most of our lives and our ecosystem might be ceased.
The effect of the changing magnetism would continue in the future, and it might bring a more negative outcome; therefore, we should consider about what would happen, then how we should cope with that.
The confirmed effect of the magnetism has caused some terrible influence on the Earth and creatures now.
First, the certain animal’s radar that has gone wrong has become a physical consequence now. According to Whitehouse, “The numbers of cetacean – whale, dolphin and porpoise – strandings around the UK have doubled over the last 10 years” (2005, par. 11). This consequence shows that the changing of the magnetism has affected animals that have a personal radar system and are led by the magnetism absolutely. Well, if it were continuing in the future, what would it happen? It is an easy question; the extinction of these animals would occur first, and the food chain must change next. As a result, the ecosystem will have acute damage. Then, our food resources would also sharply decrease after some animals’ extinction occurs.
Next, besides food resources, we would also face the problems related with our lives. Because of the changing magnetism, credit cards would not work well or break their data and lose user’s account, then affected radar system would indicate the wrong direction to the destination. We must adapt to the magnetism change once it changed. For example, we must remake a world map relating the compass with the changed magnetism. However, it must take a long time to fix, and the magnetism has changed nowadays. So, it might be difficult to make accurate maps.
Then, as the aforesaid sentence, every creature on the Earth might be exposed to the solar wind because of the change of the magnetism. Solar wind that is from the Sun’s corona has very high temperature, then the magnetic field of the Earth protects us from the corona that comes from the sun (Hathaway, 2003). However, the magnetic field has faded nowadays. By that changing, the great helpful shield would be penetrated and we could be exposed to deadly gas by the solar wind in the future.
Second, it must also be an important factor whether the faded magnetism will recover or not. As Bentley wrote, the changing magnetism flip-flops which mean the magnetism reverses, and that activity is the primary cause of the decrease of the magnetism (Bentley, 2004). As he wrote, the changing magnetism is caused from the magnetic reversals. However, it is unclear whether the decreased power will be recovered or not, in the sense of being able to be recovered in an environmental cycle, such as ; water, forest, soil, air, or renewable resources.
If the magnetism were not recovered anymore, we must have the possibility of a crisis, as I wrote in first argument. Although, as Bentley wrote, “The earth’s invisible shield could also grow back in strength” (2003, par. 13), magnetic field can be repaired in the future; however, we do not how long the magnetism may take to repair. It might also be enough that we would still be exposed to the effect of the changing magnetism.
Third, we should think about how we should cope with the change of the magnetism, although it seems to be impossible to solve. So, we should know about the magnetism for easing people off a sudden panic caused by some problems from the fading magnetism. I guess that to know about the problem before it happens would help us take connect measures against some issues.
However, the changing magnetism and its effect are not so well known by people, although it has already caused some issues, and will accelerate in the future. The reason that magnetism is not known is that it is a less noticeable phenomena than other environmental problems such as; greenhouse effect, some pollution, overpopulation, and so on, though it has as serious problems as the other environmental problems cause. Besides its inconspicuousness, the precise mechanism of the magnetism has not solved by scientists who are located in the latest frontiers of some topics of science yet.
Today, we have a lot of mediums to get knowledge; television, newspaper, and the Internet. However, people could not know a certain topic absolutely unless they always strain their attention to all kinds of news. Therefore, to make people interested in the magnetism, the most effective way would be amusement.
For example, the Hollywood movie named “The Core,” which modeled the phenomenon of the magnetic field, has already been made (Bentley, 2003); I guess that the appearance of this movie, forced our attention on the magnetism field because it must concern our life. Then, I also came to know about magnetism and some effects when read from some articles and “The magnetic field of the earth’s lithosphere: The satellite perspective” (Langel and Hinze, 1998). Those media made me interested in the magnetism and noticed some problems what it happens in the earth now. For example, “It has been noted (von Frese et al., 1982 a) that higher crustal temperatures are often associated with geodynamic processes that result in crustal thinning, intrusions from the mantle, and isostatically uncompensated topography. This leads to the expectation of an inverse relationships between gravity and magnetic anomalies” (1998, p. 325); I could know that the earth’s thermal quality is related with the magnetism from this sentence. It surprised me because of the really unnoticeable things for me.
The change of the magnetism has affected the earth and creatures there, including us, unnoticeably but absolutely. So, we need to get enough knowledge for coping with the problem.
Finally, we can not cease the change of the magnetism, nor done have the way of the solution about it completely yet. However, we can know about the magnetism and what it has caused in the earth and us now.
So, I hope some people who are related with the media will try to make some works such as the Hollywood movie “The Core,” to show that problem to others. I guess that our knowing about the issue of magnetism beforehand would be connected with the countermeasures against the sudden disasters caused by the magnetism. I will practice those proposals, and make some way to deal with this serious problem although it is too difficult to attain an answer.
